Join us for an INTENSIVE three day workshop. Expert kiln builder and designer Judah Birkeland will host Rocket Kiln Guru Lisa Orr for three days of wood firing and kiln building.
Monday:
Load and fire the Compact Wood Kiln. This kiln will be wood fired to cone ten in approximately 10 hours and reduction cooled.
Load and fire the Compact Mini Soda Kiln. This kiln will be wood fired to cone ten in approximately 8-10 hours with soda introduced towards the end.
Build a Rocket Kiln. Judah and Lisa are teaming up to assemble and refine the Rocket kiln design. Join in as we work together to attempt to make a more polished version of Lisa’s awesome upcycled fast fire wood kiln.
Tuesday:
Load and Fire the Rocket Kiln. This kiln will be fired with kindling to cone 6 in approximately 4-6 hours with soda introduced towards the end, and reduction cooled.
Load and fire electric/gas reduction kiln. This electric kiln will have a gas pilot burner to create a reduction atmosphere. It will be fired to cone 6.
Wednesday:
Unload all four kilns, analyze our results, and recap what we have learned.
Participants can bring 10-20 small to medium sized bisque fired pots. We encourage you to bring a variety of both cone 10 and cone 6 work. All glazes and slips should be applied to cone 10 work prior to arrival since loading the cone 10 kilns will begin right away. Each participant is guaranteed to get 10 pots fired, but there will likely be room for more. Bring test tiles and other small test pieces as well. Some glazes will be available for onsite glazing; however, time will be tight on Monday morning to get the cone 10 kilns loaded and firing, so don’t plan on spending a lot of time glazing cone 10 pots. There will be much more time to work on glazing the cone 6 pots since they will be loaded and fired on Tuesday.

$450: full 3 day workshop (10 pots guaranteed).

We will make a list of nearby hotels, Airbnb is also a good option.
Food:
Participants should plan breakfast and dinner on their own. We will serve a hearty lunch all three days, and supply plenty of snacks and beverages throughout the day.
